Finding Balance: The Intersection of Fitness and Alcohol Consumption Among Millennials

A survey from the Global Web Index gave insight into how Millennials are balancing two critical lifestyle habits: alcohol and exercise. More than three-quarters of these individuals report working out at least once per week and only 24% reported drinking once per week.

This survey found that Millennials are exercising more and drinking less than the generations that came before them.

  • In 2018, 33% of health club members were Millennials. That’s compared to 24% of Gen X and 14% of Gen Z
  • According to CBInsights, Millennials are flocking toward boutique studio gyms in particular.

They report that Millennials are attracted to the atmosphere and community aspect of these gyms. This generation is willing to pay for the gym experience they want, too. A 2021 survey reported that nearly 40% of Millennials have been in credit card debt due to fitness and nutrition expenses.

Despite their efforts, Millennials may not achieve the level of health they aspire to. BlueCross Blue Shield Association reports that around age 27, the health of Millennials begins to decline.

There is a strong relationship between alcohol use and fitness. Alcohol use decreases overall physical fitness, but improved physical fitness can significantly improve alcohol use disorders and their negative effects. Alcohol and fitness have an often opposing relationship. Alcohol use decreases overall fitness and hampers an individual’s ability to achieve their fitness goals. However, improving physical fitness through a variety of methods such as working out and eating a healthier diet is one of the most effective ways to combat alcoholism and counteract the many negative health effects that it causes.

Many times, when you reach for an alcoholic drink, you mix it with a sugary liquid, such as juice, to amplify the taste. Working out is also a great stress reliever to take advantage of, instead of drinking to feel the sedative effects of alcohol.
